The Mesopotamian system of weights according to written evidence (CA 3300-2200 BC)

Altorientalische Philologie

The thesis concerns the origins and early development of a single or many standard weight systems in ancient Mesopotamia. The written sources under consideration include Sumerian and Akkadian economic and legal texts, as well as royal inscriptions from Archaic, Early Dynastic, and Sargonic periods (c. 3200-2200 BC). The following questions will be examined: a. The notation of weight units in cuneiform writing at different sites and in different periods; b. Goods and objects which have been weighed; c. The existence of different regional weight standards (e.g. “mina of Der"), or those which were used for different commodities (e.g. “mina for wool"); d. The social context in which the weight system has been utilized (people who came into contact with the weight system).
The project aims to yield the following: 1. Determination of the time of emergence of one or many standard weight systems in Mesopotamia; 2. Construction of a model of the structure of the weight system, along with a definition of its functions in society. All this will ensure a contribution to Sumerian and Akkadian lexicography and grammar and to widen our knowledge about the economy and society of Early Mesopotamia.
